Close, But No Points Again
John GreavesA crucial clash in the nether regions of Div 5NW was decided by the slick performance of the Wisbech side in the first twenty minutes. Two goals resulted from breakaways as the younger, fitter home side took advantage of Cambridge South being unable to keep possession when upfield and then struggle to get back to man the ramparts.
The "volunteer" goalkeepers Owen Vaughan and Andy Thomas (thanks, chaps) played solidly in spite of unfamiliarity with the position. The defence were mostly able to keep the ball away from danger, with David Bridge's telescopic arms making some great tackles. Simon Jelley played like a man possessed with interception after tackle after block after yet-more-tackles.
In front of the Steed/Ho/Bridge/Radford defensive combo, midfielders Wilco Dijkstra, Ian Marshman and man of the match Stu Creed were busy getting the ball skillfully up the pitch with some great passing moves, resulting in enough chances to at least match the home team. Unfortunately a mix of bad luck, a classy central defender and too-good-for-this-league goalkeeper kept us out.
South upped their game in the second half and saw most of the possession and yet more chances. An extra-wide goalpost thwarted sniffer Frampton on three or four occasions and skipper Greaves was denied by that annoying keeper stopping three raspers from distance.
It wasn't to be our day though and after Wisbech grabbed a third, we were only able to get one back via Boris Lossy, a constant threat, taking a ball up the field before shooting from just inside D.
The final minutes were South's best period, attacking from all angles, but sadly with no more goals.
The teas were great.
