L2 0-2 Cambridge City Ladies 4
Ley O'DonnellFollowing December's frozen postponed match, it was time to play our rescheduled game against our biggest rivals Cambridge City (4's).
South won first pushback, to meet a drilled, fast City team. Despite City's numerous attempts on goal, our defence was strong and we held them off with excellent interceptions from Polly and Serin and good channelling and covering of the ball by Yumann and Jen. Special mention to Loopy for her super-power goalie skills with dramatic saves/dives/slaps/kicks you name it! It certainly made for an exciting and nail biting first half.
Unfortunately, despite great defending we were unable to maintain possession and push forward. After City were disallowed a short corner goal hit above the backboard, they were determined to score and eventually they managed to break through and squeeze a goal. Well done to South though for our perseverance and battling which resulted in only a 1-0 scoreline at half time.
After refuelling on jelly babies and team talk focusing on man marking and less crowding of the ball, we were ready to attack the second half. We also welcomed back one of our fellow comrades Dani!! Great to see her back on the pitch, hurray!
Almost like a different team, we completely dominated the second half with more possession, more aggressive and confident play. Hannah made excellent runs down the right wing, with Naomi supporting strong in midfield and good injections into our attacking D earning her well-deserved Man of the match. Dani and Jo worked well with Lottie and Vanessa in triangles and making strong advances towards goal.
We had a few near misses on goal but unfortunately City managed to steal the ball long enough to score a second and final goal. Cath was awarded lemon on the match…for being….hungover again :- )
All in all good team effort by everyone and despite a loss of 2-0, the low City goal score was testament to our fighting perseverance and improved fitness. Lots of positives to take through to our 1s vs 2s battle next week!
