Starting with a Bang
Charlotte MossWith wonderful sunny weather for our first league game, we were all looking forward to what we knew would be a tough match. Newmarket were very strong and well organised last season, and this was still true of their team this year. We had a team full of new players, which was really great to see, and throughout the match we really did progress as a team.
The first half was spent by South focusing on defence. Newmarket were very quick on the break and scored an early opening goal, which was unlucky as Ellie had positioned herself well for her first time in goal (she did a stellar job!). We gave away a few short corners which Newmarket were able to capitalise on to score, and a third short followed from a stick tackle call. South were able to make a couple of breaks but unfortuntely the passage of the ball was quickly cut out by Newmarket.
The second half was much better worked as a team, with more communication and much more time spent in the opposition's half. We came close a couple of times in this half but the finishing just wasn't quite there. We had a goalie change in this half, with Emma stepping in. She also did really well and managed to get a fantastic stop, which was unfortunately caught on the rebound by Newmarket for another goal.
This game was a good start to the season (and a much better result than our last game at Newmarket!)
