Victory at Last

John Greaves

A deserved first victory of the season was the result of every player sticking to his role, 100% effort and two nice goals from Pip Ho.

In the first half Cambridge South had more of the possession and a number of good chances. Unfortunately Stu Creed was unable to capitalise on his own incisive running and dribbling on a number of occasions, seeing shots whizz past the post. Skipper John Greaves shot narrowly wide after good build up play by the evergreen Phil Harvey, whose twists and turns bamboozled Spalding repeatedly.

The deadlock was broken by man of the match Pip Ho, with a long range effort through a packed D.

Spalding had more of the ball in the second half but in spite of winning many short corners were unable to convert, thanks to the authoritative keeper Matt Saint-Gower blocking and palming away their shots, and the fast-running home defence closing attackers down. Credit to Ky Ho for marshalling things, Nick Georgiadis and Howard Steed hassling Spalding's forwards, and the whole defence snuffing out their moves before clearing the ball rapidly or starting off a home attack.

Pip Ho got his second goal after a lovely move from the Simon Jelley - Phil Harvey combo ending with Phil passing across the goalmouth to a grateful Pip to slot the ball into the net.

It was great to see South using the width of the pitch on both sides. Another exemplary game by Laurie Ho and Tom Steed on one side, and the improving Cameron MacLeod and the telescopically-armed David Bridge on the other...with Andy Thomas popping up on all sides (and the centre)...kept Spalding stretched. Ian Marshman and Shahbaz Ali, both carrying injuries, battled unstintingly for the cause, finding space and making themselves available for passes.

Although this was maybe not the toughest game of the season a great turnout of sixteen players, coping well with the inevitable blur of substitutions, showed obvious improvement as a team and league respectability is not out of the question.
