Top vs Bottom
John GreavesThe best team won, and Cambridge South tried hard.
Sadly effort, pressurising opponents in possession, continuously trying to put passing moves together, and calm defence getting the ball away from danger whenever possible were not enough to overcome greater skills, and fine team play orchestrated by some St Neots players bafflingly playing way below their normal level.
St Neots got four goals in the first half…
…and three more in the second.
There were enouraging signs -
- Less experienced players Cameron Maclaod and Andy Thomas making life difficult by marking and tackling with increasing confidence.
- Lino back to his authoratitive best in goal , except when he seemed to lose a pad whilst narrowly missing another sharp shot whizzing past him.
- The yoof element of L. Ho, P. Ho and T. Steed showing us all how it should be done, and proud dads H. Steed and K. Ho following the example to show that the old dogs aren't gone yet.
- The brothers Ali quietly playing their roles, with precious little ball to feed on.
- Wilco and Stu trying manfully to extract themselves from tight markers, with skillful twists and turns and some success in the heart of midfield.
- Phil Harvey playing as if central defence is his natural position and still managing to launch attacks.
- Some thunderbolt Greaves crosses recalling past times.
Everyone stuck to the task, and the pizzas were good afterwards.
