Heads We Win

Emma Saynor

The sun was low in the sky and shining brightly (unfortunately, rather blindingly) when Cambridge South Ladies 2s stepped on to the pitch to try and repeat their early season win against Ely's 2s. With the close season-opener in mind, it was sticks to the ground and on to the pitch for a speedy little warm up. Please note it was not whilst the Men's teams were still playing as requested by Iona! Some strong practice hits going on, perhaps a little too strong with Emma Sa (GK) taking two body hits before the whistle blew.

It was a strong first half with an early attempt on goal from South. Nothing like a positive start to get the blood flowing. Some excellent clearances from Roisin and the defensive team led to quick turn arounds in the D and consistent pressure on Ely's goal. Taking advantage of this, Lauren steamed through to make it one-nil to Cambridge.

The second half may have started with one less player (social lives!), but there was no holding Cambridge back after the renewed power of the magic jelly baby had taken effect. It was soon two-nil thanks to some great communication and a powerful goal by Naomi. This was supported by the 'special' defensive skills of Dani's face. Her dedication to the game is second to none but her face is now a little uneven!

Some lovely defence meant Ely stood no chance of evening up the score board, but never one to miss an opportunity Lauren sealed the win with a further goal for Cambridge South after a great pass from Flo.

A match well played and well rewarded, with double the pizza for the home team. Never mind that we'll all have the arteries of an 80 year old next week.

For asking why we couldn't warm up on the pitch, even though the M3s were still playing.
