A Close Shave
Flix RennyWe knew this could be a tricky game, partly because we were missing a few players, but more importantly because of the number of times the word ‘hangover’ was used in the lead up to the game. However, we were pleased to see Georgie Hu back on the pitch after an injury! And also pleased to have the help of Iona, Hannah and Harriet.
Soooo there was a bit of a rocky start, for me in particular. Unfortunately the effects of a night on the town was taking it’s toll on my brain function as I spent the warm up wandering about looking for astro shoes to borrow – then basically managed to completely miss the start of the match, leaving the team unknowingly starting a man down.
Although I did eventually find my way on to the pitch, Spalding took advantage of the situation by taking the lead with an early goal. Their lead was short lived as a short corner strike deflected off me (literally) to bring the score to 1-1. Then a good goal from Jess took us into the lead.
Spalding continued to battle, constantly challenging us to keep up the pace by levelling the game again at 2-2. Harriet’s tenacious tackling and effort on the right helped to keep us going. Similarly Kim’s claw didn’t hold her back from some solid play keeping us together in the middle.
The goals kept coming for both teams, as Jess scored another after a drive from Laura, and then Spalding matched us again. Fortunately Jess’s short corner strike secured us one last goal at 4-3, giving her a hangover hat-trick. The last ten minutes felt like forever and Loopy made some essential saves after Spalding had some dangerous breaks. I think it’s safe to say we were all relieved when the final whistle was blown!
The much-needed win keeps us in a good position in the table but the upcoming games will be key if we’re going to make it up to second place in the league.

Late, no shoes, missed the beginning of the game...late night perhaps?
