A Score Worth Waiting For
Lucy LucasA great start to today’s match: we wake up to snow. Only a sprinkle and only in Saffron Walden, but there was snow somewhere.
After establishing the ever-confusing substitute situation (or is this just me?), the match started. It appeared that South weren’t quite with it at the start (possibly due to the fact we weren’t over the non-existent snow) and with a slight deflection from myself (soz), Newmarket got the first goal of the game.
Ten minutes into the game we managed to get into gear with some lovely passing happened around the pitch. A direct pass from Grace and great positioning from Eimear scored us our first goal. At some point Harriet unfortunately got a ball to the face, time was stopped and ice arrived. With a sore face and a fat lip (what a trooper) she was however soon back on the pitch.
After specifically pointing out her movements to the umpire, and a lengthy discussion to follow, Naomi was taught how far 5m really was. With this episode, her “Hulk rage” and shouting at Grace, which apparently “Wasn’t very nice”, led to her being voted LOM. Love you really, Naomi.
Despite only having a minute for half time, the team decided it was still an excellent idea to inhale the usual half time sweets. After this, I did feel I had to inform my Newmarket player of my slight indigestion and how this was causing difficulties with my mouth guard. Tactically, this was a great decision.
Indigestion aside, there was some excellent passing from South and great movement from Harriet and Hannah in the middle. Flo made some amazing strikes on goal but unfortunately their goalie was starring in her own thrilling blockbuster and was therefore showing off for the camera. Part of her script seemed to include inadvertently taking out Eimear. With persistence, Flo managed to score the second of South’s goals and we took the lead.
With this in our path, another cracking pass from Grace and Eimear’s great positioning soon lead to our third goal. I hear they call themselves the Dream Team.
Some more hockey happened, and goals four and five were scored by Harriet.
At some point Newmarket were awarded a short corner, and with me running one and Louisa covering the left post, Serin and Valerie decided it was necessary for them to both cover the right post. Was this confusion or was this tactical? Either way, Newmarket didn’t score and joint Lemon votes were awarded.
As Newmarket began to tire, Lauren cracked in a lovely goal within the last five minutes, leading us to a 6-1 win!
Mainly due to my pre-match coffee giving me the energy to do a solid job marking my opposite number, I was crowned MoM by my lovely team mates. Cheers girls!
