They Can't Believe It's All Over
Diane EichelsheimAnd there we went, all the way through the flat, freezing fens, to Spalding, where we played our final match of the season.
And what a match it was!
We started off strong, with eleven players on the pitch and one on the side line (there should have been two subs on the side line but Emma M, aka Mossy, aka space cadet, went to the wrong side of Spalding. Her excuse? She was too hung over to type in the right post code. One should never admit this to the captain, should one?)
With goals scored in the first few minutes of play, we went from strength to strength. Lou C and Default Fairlie were getting more and more excited, as they were promised some time up front if by half time we were secured of a win.
Sophie, Jess, Laura and Jeffers indeed made this possible as, with great support from the sideline by Soph’s mum and Rich, we found ourselves 9-0 up by half time. And we had gained a sub! Mossy had found her way to the pitch in the last five minutes of the first half.
But, as has been the case with so many matches in the past, it was again a game of two halves. As we were nine goals up we thought we might as well ‘mess about a bit’. Our usual defence went up front, strikers played in defence and for a little while no one really knew where they were playing or what they were doing! So Kim decided to just throw in some dramatic falls and a few epic misses, Soph did some air swinging to at least do something and Loopy finally got a chance to touch the ball. Julie, Howles and Polly, however, kept their cool throughout and provided us with a rock solid defence amongst the chaos, so that at least we didn’t concede a goal!
Once we found a little bit of composure again, we actually managed to build up a few attacks and suddenly Lou found herself by a post, just in the right position for an excellent strike across goal from Laura, and…GOALLLLLL!
Safe to say we ended the season on a high! And with a third position in the league table I think we can be really proud of ourselves. Well done girlies and thanks for a great season!
