Goals Can Jump Out of Anywhere

Hannah Kenyon

South Ladies' 2 arrived at the pitch, raring to go for the last game of the season. After our past few wins we were hoping for a good one for the end of season. With international and multi-species fans (looking at you, Lobster) supporting us from the sideline, we were feeling good.

Right off the bat the L2s' attacked strongly, getting the ball into the opposition's half. We had several opportunities but we were just not finding the goal. One of our forays led to a St Neots player fetching a ball from the base line and hitting her head on the football goal lurking behind there. Goals are triksy buggers and can move at any moment; we were painfully aware of this by now.

The St Neots ladies were sturdy in defence and well-practiced, hitting the ball away with force. Fortunately, South have some fast legs that kept thwarting their efforts to clear the ball and running it back into their D. Some more opportunities and we finally locate the goal!

With the first goal in, we manage to get back into our groove and start showing St Neots what the South Ladies 2s are made of. 3-0 and the halftime whistle blows.

Half time involved a lot of bags of sweets (including one which landed in Dani's face - thanks Laurie!)

Back on the pitch, refuelled with copious amounts of sugar, the Ladies' 2s rush out. We kept taking the ball in their half, so much that our whole team was over the halfway line at one point (other than Emma, making sure the goal didn't run away). There was a moment in this half where Flo received the ball, bounced the ball, sat around the ball (almost doing the splits), got up and managed to keep the ball...maybe she's using magnets?

At some point during the game, St Neots managed to break away and run it down the pitch. Our defence, hanging high with sugar-fuelled enthusiasm (and seeking the last chance of glory) didn't manage to neutralise their forward attack and unfortunately conceded a goal.

Fired up, South attack again, making sure to keep someone behind to prevent another sneaky attack. South keep the ball up in their half for the remainder of the game leading to several more goals and a brilliant penalty flick by sharp shooter, Flo.

All in all, a fun game to end the season with! St Neots even said to us after the game that we were a lovely team. Bring on next season!
