Men's 3rds beat St Neots 5
Cambridge South followed up last weeks impressive display with another totally dominating display to brush aside a St Neots team which seemed a little out its depth. The damage was inflicted in the first half as South scored three goals without reply.
South dominated straight from the starting pass although nearly came undone early on as the defence was caught forward and the St Neots centre forward broke through and, having rounded keeper Will Benedikz, shot wide.
It was Wilco Dijkstra who opened the scoring after just ten minutes with one of his trade mark back post finishes following good work down the right wing by Rory Johnson and James Bridge. The return of the latter strengthened the South midfield and it was he who scored the second goal from a penalty flick after a period where South continued to look a little vulnerable to counter attack.
A short corner was pushed out for James to shoot and his goal-bound shot was stopped by a foot on the St Neots line. Although the St Neots keeper did very well to reach the ball from the ensuing penalty flick he was unable to do more than push it into the side netting of the goal.
The forward line of Dijkstra, James Pope, Ali Blake and Rory Johnson, ably supported by the Bridge brothers, continued to harrass the St Neots backline. They forced a series of short corners at the end of the half and since the whistle went as the corner was taken South threw everyone forward. It was Wilco Dijkstra who scored from the second short corner, sneaking the ball home from close range.
St Neots reorganised in the second half and became more of a threat. The South defence of Andrew Leonard, John Benedikz and debutant Rod Richardson were put to the test on several occasions, only breaking once when a ball through the middle of them all was carefully placed past the out rushing keeper Will Benedikz. St Neots continued to break away and put pressure on South although none of their short corners proved to be threatening.
South were not quite finished and scored a final goal when James Bridge netted from a powerful strike from another short corner. St Neots still pushed forward afterwards and it was thanks again to James Bridge who dropped back and helped out the defensive links Finn Johnson and Tom Harrison.
James Bridge
A difficult choice, but he was an ever-present thorn in the side of the St Neots defence and also bagged 2 goals.
