So Here We Go Again. League Game Time

Owen Russell

So easily were we back into the swing of things. The motivational YouTube vids, the demands for Double Bear Haribos, Anns's pre-game ritual, an influx of Matts, Hollywood's warm up and, alas, our inability to finish off a CoP side.

CSHC M2s had the majority of possession and of the chances in the game against our visitors but came away with nothing. It is not to say we deserved to win or that CoP didn’t, but there was a definite a feeling of ‘gutted-ness’, as the home players trudged off the pitch.

Beforehand we were all roused into game mode by the as-ever motivating and wise words from the Brilliant Leader, both New Matts were introduced into the fray, in XXL shirts. There was even a crowd for us, some hangers on from the preceding M1s match and some of the M3s who had nothing better to do after their cancelled Ely trip. It was all shaping up nicely…

CSHC had most of the early exchanges, Hollywood, Pirate and Walshy finding a lot of time and space in the middle and New Matt and Wizz buzzing around and allowing Nev to do his thing and play the exquisite passes. Several chances came and went, each one getting closer, so it was no surprise when South took the lead. A deft through ball from Hollywood found Nev on the right of the D and he calmly slid the ball under the onrushing goalie, as Newest Matt made the clever run to pull the defence apart. The roles were reversed for the next chance for the home side but Hollywood could only find the keeps's chest guard with his effort.

As the half wore on CoP came into it more – their mix of youth and experience doing well and it was the former who managed to break away and get the ball to the latter to strike in. Thanks soon went to GK George who made a solid double save, coming off his line to maintain parity, and that’s how it stayed until half time.

It was actually South who scored next, one time getting round the back of the right and pulling it back to Wizz to knock it home. The team headed back to the half way line as the goal was given; however, Wizz wasn’t celebrating. Honest Oli stuck his hand in the air and owned up to it coming off his foot before scoring – earning him a few MoM votes, but as it turned out more LoM votes…it was the right thing to do though so credit to him.

There were more chances in the second half and lots of bobbling, swerving runs through the middle by the midfielders. But the link to the forwards never materialised and despite possession we didn’t really test their keeper.

And you can probably guess what happened with a few minutes to go. Fast break, clever working of the ball and a back post tap-in. A last few minutes of increased effort still didn’t create any clear cut chances so at the final whistle, three cheers for the winners, but a lot of dissecting of what went wrong and making plans for what to do next week was done over the post-match pints.
