On the Road Once Again

Blythe Murphy

Off the back of our very strong preseason form, the L1s were looking to continue our winning streak with their first game of the season at Peterborough.

Following a strong but early start to the day, involving a cheeky breakfast of champions, we arrived at the pitch to find ourselves without a changing room, and a man who had no idea what was going on.

Quick turn around and out to the pitch. A solid warm-up and a motivational speech from Lou and we were raring to go.

First half and with a new formation to try out, the L1s took a while to settle in. Peterborough were looking strong on the break. Some great play on the right hand side from Roisin and Flix helped us to move on up the field.

After an unlucky turnover, Peterborough made a strong break and managed to make it into our D and win a short corner. Following a solid straight strike and an unlucky deflection (sorry Lou), Peterborough had the ball in the goal. But, alas for them, the referee blew her whistle and made a game-changing decision: the goal was disallowed for being struck outside the D.

South pushed on and, following a very quick free hit, Elaine played a straight ball through to Sophie who played it straight into the top corner. Hooray! One-nil to South.

Second half and South came out strong. A courageous and determined performance from the defence kept a strong attack from Peterborough at bay. For the rest of second half South played like we'd talked about in training, with lots of strong passing and many close opportunities, especially from Flo and Soph.

Overall a great performance from the L1s, with lots of potential and hope going forward in the season. The winning streak continues into the season.

Special shout–out to Diane for the delightful Birthday cake for Sophie!
