Fireworks at Kettering
John GreavesCambridge South 4ths continue their winning run with a solid "one nil to the South" performance at blustery Kettering.
The first half saw the away defence sparkle but, in spite of having the bulk of possession, the goals proved elusive with only a load of short corners and a John Greaves tonk rattling the upright to show for their domination. The Kettering goalkeeper repeatedly put out the attacking flames with multiple goal line blocks and much bravery.
Just rewards almost arrived early in the second half when a melee in the D saw an Ian Marshman shot kicked off the line by a defender, only for the resulting Paul South P-flick to be turned into a damp squib when it was disallowed for hitting (rather than flicking). Don't think so, said Paul. Think so, said the umpire. Kettering then began to gain the ascendancy, but Rock Radford and his gang weren’t about to succumb. The nearest they came to conceding was a goalline clearance. Never any danger, said the defenders.
Then things get a bit more fiery with two Kettering players seeing green and one yellow, for offences relating to being slow to retreat and some neat blocks after conceding free hits. Howard Steed took this as a good example to follow, by doing exactly the same thing under the nose of the umpire, and compounding the offence by tackling the free hitter after he had moved precisely one yard. Yellow card. Put it down to commitment and enthusiasm.
This woke the Cambridge South team, with renewed pressure on the Kettering goal eventually giving man of the match, defender-midfielder-forward Alex Pashley, his chance to burst into the D and fire a rocket of a shot into the net from distance.
And that was that. Time for tea at the golf club…sorry, cricket club.
