Cambridge South Fireworks vs. Royston

Dani Kilsby-Steele

The timber was stacked high following a nine-one win for South the week before. South were keen to light the game on fire but the umpires (with head mikes on) had to carry out their sound checks before the show could begin. Royston won first push back and took off like a rogue firework, starting before the whistle. Take two, and with the strike of a match the game exploded into life.

Within the time of a sparkler's life, we stole our first goal. South continued to stoke the fire throughout the first half with Mel, Lucy B and Roisin delivering the ball up the field time and time again, giving Kendra, Lauren and Izzy plenty of opportunities to apply pressure in the D. The bottle of fizz, on offer for a deflection off the post, remained uncollected as a few crosses flashed past the wrong side of the posts. However, with a burst of energy, South were able to ignite another attack, to end the half two up.

At the beginning of the second half, Manager Chalk, with a display of confidence, sent us on our way with only nine players on the pitch - perhaps a risky move during his probationary period! However, all eleven pieces of kindle were quickly thrown back into the fire and South lit up the field with a renewed attack on the opposition.

The defence helped fan the flames and extinguished any stray sparks from the opposition, with Ellie, Meg and Lucy M making sure no one could fizzle out our day. There was only one squealer, allowing the opposition to sneak a short corner, but it was cleanly defended and the 'fire' ball was sent back up the pitch.

As the embers glowed, Katie kept the whole team in suspense with a stellar performance, protecting the ball in the top right corner of the pitch like it was a stockpile of gunpowder - the opposition must have fouled her at least five times! Katie held her ground and the ball was delivered into the D for another shot on goal. This one didn't make it in but South sent two more rockets past the goalie for a four-nil finish to us, as the final flames died out.

Katherine 'Wheel' Atkin was all over the pitch from start to finish, deservedly winning Man of the Match. However, it was a tight contest with votes for nine members of the team!

Manager Chalk secured himself another Lemon of the Match for his terrible counting, but at least the goalie made it through the whole game on the pitch this time!
