A Good Game for 69 Minutes. Less Good for the Last 1 Minute
John GreavesA battling one-one draw. Probably a fair scoreline, although the last minute excitement meant that it could have been quite different.
Cambridge South were on top in the first half, with the usual quota of goalmouth scrambles, J Greaves, Shahbaz Ali and P South goalbound efforts blocked, short corners not quite coming off, and 4th XI defensive solidity.
St Neots began to gain confidence in the second half, passing the ball around well and stretching the home team. Luckily the defence and keeper, George Toynton, were up to the challenge. The home attack had our share of breakaway attacks, with some lovely sweeping passing moves…Team Creed, Phil Harvey and guest star, Rasmus Petersen, to the fore.
We thought we’d clinched it with ten minutes to go when a Greaves blaster from a neat Harvey through pass was tipped past the post by the annoyingly good St Neots keeper. Then man of the match, Laurie Ho, showing his ability to play in defence, midfield and attack simultaneously, popped up with a cracker from the top of the D to take the lead with two minutes left. We thought it was all over. But not so: St Neots came straight back to win a last short corner, and snuck the ball into the net at the final whistle to earn the draw.
