South v Ely
Louisa WarburtonI'm afraid the detail is rather lacking in this match report as, despite being present for the full game, I really couldn't tell you much of what happened, so here goes for the briefest of summaries:
At the last meeting the game ended on a nil-all draw so, on our current great form, we all stepped out looking for a clear win.
It wasn't a very fluid game: a bit stop and start with quite a few half pitch hits to the back line from our opposition, but for much of the game we kept the ball in their half with our press working well to keep the pressure up on their defence. When Ely did attack, they overloaded our D but fortunately our solid defence kept them at bay.
From the goalie to the forwards, everyone had a great game: there was some strong and terrier-like defending from the likes of Hannah, Serin, Lucy (a particularly good tackle towards the end of the game), Ellie and Dani which meant our midfielders and forwards were continually being fed the ball; Kate made some great runs up the right, out-pacing her marker, and Katie showed off her stick skills to get past several players. Emma-Rose scored a fantastic goal with a slap hit which lifted the ball over the keeper. Emma was involved in the second goal too, with an excellent pass from the right midfield which was passed on by Kendra to Lauren, who finished well. No surprise that, despite a strong performance from the whole team, Emma carried away the MOM vote for the game.
And to the lemon, which was Jan, for kicking the ball in the D in the dying seconds of the game. However, through his selfless service afterwards in getting ready to captain his own game, he was absent at teas, thus avoiding any discussion of him donning the rather fetching lemon yellow onesie…
