Nice One, Badger!

Lou Cantwell

Having secured the champion's spot at the top of Div 3 last weekend, the only thing the L1s couldn't do this week was (literally) not turn up in Horncastle. So away we went on the 2hr 20m trek through the Fens. A 7.20am start from Cambridge and a Lolworth rendezvous later, we were en route, everyone (except Robyn Mc, who has unfortunately given up the Golden Arches for Lent) eagerly awaiting the scheduled breakfast stop at the tourist hotspot that is the Pinchbeck roundabout. This otherwise unremarkable location provided perhaps the highlight of the day, when a casual genealogical question from Kim to Heather resulted in our favourite centre-midfielder casually revealing that Borsuk means Badger in Polish.

Fast-forward another hour and we finally arrived in Horncastle. The sun was shining and the 1s were ready to go out and have some fun for our last outing of the season. Not our finest performance, perhaps, but a win's a win. I was concerned that I wasn't going to see much pitch time after being informed by the umpires (one of whom played hockey for years with our Solid 8 sweeper and obviously knew he was on to a winner) that if any of our team gave any backchat, I'd be carded instead of the player. But the impeccable behaviour of the South girls meant this wasn't an issue today.

Horncastle were much stronger than when we last met them at Long Road before Christmas and it was more of an end-to-end game than we've had for a few weeks. Our 'next generation' group of Emma-Rose, Kate and Roisin stepped up and made crucial contributions throughout the game - with Emma-Rose's battling performance on the wing earning her a well-deserved Man of the Match award. It was nil-nil at half time but the 1s were pretty chilled about it, given the amount of time we'd spent camped in the opposition half. That was until they realised I'd made the gut-wrenching error of mistaking an empty jelly babies packet for a full one…

We went out for our usual Big Five at the start of the second half and rapidly racked up a series of short corners. It wasn't long before Kim bagged a classic left post tap in to put us one up and minutes later Izzy put us two ahead with a well-fought knock in. Loopy pulled off a couple of awesome saves (even if one was a tad last minute) and our defence mopped up Horncastle's counterattacks with efficient aplomb. Kim got hit. South carried on piling forward and were eventually rewarded with a flick for a foot in front of goal. Izzy stepped up and tucked it low to the keeper's left.

With about five minutes to go, a classic Cantwell foot in the D left South defending a short corner. An unlucky deflection off Kim's stick, running one, hit Robyn at shoulder height before bouncing off the inside of the post into the lap of a Horncastle forward. Oh well. After ~70 minutes in the sun we were glad to get off to teas and avoid any Rosselli-style sunburn.

A special mention must go to the Horncastle side's epic spread for teas, and Hannah's latest entry for Baked Goods of the Season proving incredibly delicious. We headed back out to the tyre stacks to watch the first half of the M3s' encounter and were richly rewarded with a sweet goal from King Julien and his even sweeter dance moves in celebration.

Overall, a fantastic result to end the season on a high. Bring on the celebrations at the Annual Dinner.

Really strong and battling performance on the right wing - great tackling and attacking runs.
