Four-Goal Mathews Strikes Again…

Howard Steed

A keenly contested game between two evenly matched teams, comprised of a mixture of 'old-crocs' and 'young whippersnappers'. In a re-run of one of the M5s' last outings in 2014, the captain shrewdly selected the unstoppable Mathews as centre forward. This was handsomely rewarded with a four goal flurry that clinched the match!

The opposition were first off the mark with a blistering shot that caught defender Steed napping on the right-hand post. This was followed by two further goals in the first half despite some robust defending by the regular M4s back four combination of Thomas, Bridge, Williamson and Steed, plus some heroic saves from kicking back Whittaker. By half-time however, the 5's had managed to claw themselves back into the game with a pair of goals from that man Mathews.

Spurred on by the arrival of Saint-Gower in goal for the second half, the combination of Ali, Harvey, Dijkstra, West and Dookun began to dominate the midfield, the latter being rewarded with a goal early in the half. This was followed by a slightly controversial penalty being awarded for a save on the line - unfortunately not by the opposition's kicking back, Whittaker - and the resulting penalty flick was converted by Espley.

The M4s managed to claw another goal back from a nicely executed short corner but the irrepressible Mathews was on hand again to seal the result with a couple more goals.

A good afternoon's hockey was rounded off nicely with several square feet of pizza and seventeen cans of coke!

Great first half performance as a kicking back, not quite matched in the second half for the opposition!
