Ten-Man South Battle to the End!

Howard Steed

The M5s arrived at the familiar Longsands astro already a man down, although it would have been two without a late call-up for Ho Senior. Fortunately, St Neots generously made up our numbers with an early arrival for their M1s match.

South started well, the midfield combination of Ali, Marshman, Harvey and our St Neots man, Gareth, pressurising the opposition defence. It wasn't to last, however. St Neots were able to break through the South defensive quartet of Thomas, Glover, Ho Senior and Steed to beat 'on-loan from Royston' goalkeeper, Farmer. Unfortunately this spurred on the opposition attack, leading to a further three goals before the half-time break. Matters were made worse when South defender Glover went crashing to the ground with a nasty hamstring strain.

Ten man South came out fighting in the second half but, despite all the efforts of the attacking duo of Ali and Ho Junior, weren't able to claw anything back until a well-executed short corner routine saw Ho Jnr put the ball past the opposition keeper. Frustratingly, the goal was disallowed either for not coming out of the D or not going back in, we're not quite sure which. St Neots responded with two further goals before Marshman, lurking on the far post, helped South off the mark. This was followed by another strike on goal from Ho Jnr which fortunately this time was allowed. A well deserved consolation!

Two more goals from the opposition sealed the eight-two scoreline.

St Neots were definitely the better side but ten man South put up a brave fight right until the end.
