Men's 3rds beat St Ives 5

Cambridge South continued their surge towards safety with a strong performance against fellow strugglers, St Ives. South, who earlier in the season had lost to St Ives 7-2, dominated for two thirds of the match in a performance that suggested that relegation is increasingly unlikely. The victory lifts them to within a point of St Ives.

Cambridge South attacked St Ives from the starting whistle, immediately driving them back into their own half. Despite constant pressure so that St Ives could not cross their own twenty-five yard line, South failed to score in the first twenty minutes. Creditably, South were not frustrated by this and continued to search for weaknesses in the ominously solid St Ives defence. Strikers Wilco Dijkstra and Nick Wong causing particular trouble to the visitors. South's pressure paid off with time when they gained several short corners and it was from one of these shorts that South first scored. A well struck ball into the D by sweeper John Benedikz was magnificently swept home through the keepers legs by Nick Wong.

The second goal followed soon after, when a free hit was awarded on the top of the St Ives D. Keeping their heads South played the ball quickly into the area catching the keeper off guard and Nick Wong poked the ball home after the St Ives defence failed to pick up his darting run across the goalmouth. Two-nil nearly became three-nil when hardworking midfield dynamo Andy Kennedy picked the ball up on the St Ives twenty-five yard line and whilst running in, struck the ball on target. The thump of the ball on the backboard was enough to get South's keeper and captain Will Benedikz celebrating again, little realising that shot was from fractionally outside the area.

At 2-0 up South suffered a minor slump at the start of the second half and St Ives pushed forward against the South defence. South looked nervous despite being in control and it was clear that a goal for the visitors could open the door for them. St Ives had several chances to pull goals back, including a number of penalty corners, but found the South back line of Ky Ho, Will Marston and Andrew Pounce in a very determined frame of mind. Time and again South spoilt St Ives's short corners and limited St Ives to a single clear shooting opportunity, which was dragged wide. The defence's doggedness in clearing the ball set up a number of attacks. On the counter attack South looked very dangerous. Winger David Bridge had several strong runs from his own half and nearly set up Nick Wong twice, although the visiting keeper denied him. On the right, Rob Barton provided valuable and reliable relief for the defence as well as a dangerous point of attack down the wings.

James Bridge capped a fine individual performance in central midfield by scoring the side's third goal. This was another turning point in the game and South were again in the ascendancy. James's goal with about fifteen minutes to play killed off any chance St Ives had of salvaging points from the game. With the confidence of the goal behind them South resumed playing fluid hockey, attacking down both wings with equal confidence and torturing the visiting defence.

South's final goal, scored by Rob Barton, was made by more persistent play from the South's forwards. Rob reacted first to pounce on a rebound off the keeper and slot the ball home to wrap up a fine win.

Just shades it from James Bridge, for scoring twice and for not stopping for the whole 70 minutes.
