Yule Be Glad When This Match Report is Over

Lou Cantwell

This Saturday saw the L1s take a sleigh-ride across the fens for the rearranged match against Wisbech. Our game a few weeks ago had been called off because the frost lay deep and crisp and even on the pitch. Not today, however, so our thirteen purple-to-purple girls followed the star northwards for our final game before the Christmas break.

Ten of us arrived. Wondering whether Georgie and her accompanying elves had been blown off course, we gave them a bell only to find that the three were smugly installed at the wrong pitch. Once all thirteen were present and correct, we got underway. With three wise reinforcements joining us from the L2s this week – Roisin, Katie and Izzy – we put in another solid team performance to bag another three points and put us top of the tree once again.

Once we got into our stride, the goals came at the ends of some great passing moves and from a sackful of short corners. South flocked into the Wisbech half, with Kim tobogganing up and down the pitch to neatly wrap up seven of our goals, with the rest coming from Amalia, Alison, Robyn Murray and Lou. Heather put in a nut-cracking performance in midfield and should definitely get some glory for stocking up the assists. Our pair of Robyns were once again rocking, and Hannah’s spin-off move gave us great cheer as ever. Unfortunately for Loopy, not a creature was stirring around the South goal and for the second game running, there wasn’t much to do for our stable keeper at the back.

After what were universally agreed to be the best match teas we’ve ever had – a full Christmas dinner of turkey, ham, stuffing, swede, gravy and the all-important red cabbage followed by mince pies and crackers – we jingled all the way back down the A10 to the CSHC Christmas party. Thank you to our epic hosts - newly-promoted Wisbech have had a bit of a torrid time of it so far this season, but their mix of experience and youth put up a really good fight throughout the game and we look forward to repaying them with Cherry Box pizza in the New Year.

7 goal stardom from our terrier in midfield.

First ever hat-trick including a diving reverse stick strike into the bottom corner. (Yes, I never thought I'd see that in print either…)

Left the satnav at home and 'smugly' waited for the rest of the team to turn up…at the wrong pitch.
