Lots of Oomph!
Lauren BrownSaturday started with an 8 o'clock rallying cry from Captain Dani: twenty-one keen beans at the start of March had somehow dwindled to eleven and it felt a little like tempting fate to enter into a game previously abandoned to due injuries with a bare eleven. No fear - Naomi to the rescue - sacrificing her Saturday plans to help out (thanks again, Naomi!). Who needs science when there’s hockey to be played?!
A quick shuffle of the team sheet, copious amounts of cereal, a very enthusiastic call to arms from Katie (a little reminiscent of last week’s M2s' match report!) and Ryan Gosling videos were the perfect preparation for a game the L2s were determined to win. Those not familiar with the circumstances leading to this week’s slip date game can read about them here. The aims for the day were clear; score the six goals needed to justify the League’s decision to insist the game was replayed and, ideally, score more than the seven that found the net in the (half) game back at the start of February.
If that wasn’t enough motivation in itself there was the small matter of crowning the L2s' Goal Queen. With a couple of Mixed matches between now and Annual Dinner it wouldn’t quite be over but today offered a good opportunity for Izzy and Kendra to add to their tallies, going into the game tied on twenty-five goals apiece.
After a shaky first couple of minutes, with Newmarket entering the South half more times than they did in the entire (half) previous game, South found their rhythm and took the lead quite early on through Lauren, chipping the keeper as she charged out from the goal line. Izzy made it two-nil, before Lauren took it to three before half time. After the break another six goals were added; two from Kendra, Eimear getting the last touch on a goal line scramble from a short – much to Izzy’s annoyance, a third from Lauren and a second from Izzy, with an absolutely cracking strike from a short corner (N.B. the order of those goals is somewhat subjective…). Best goal of the game, however, was saved ‘til last, with Kendra sending a looping strike from the left into the top right corner, exclaiming, “I’ve been waiting all season to score one like that!” I think most would be waiting for a lot longer!
The previous paragraph very much focussed on the forward line but this was a real team performance. The defence swept up any Newmarket advances with ease and the midfield were very much involved in all forward play, with particular mention going to Emma-Rose, an almost unanimous MoM for her brilliant play down the right wing.
Gathering for a team photo at the final whistle gave the opportunity for Serin to earn herself the final Lemon vote of the season. With everyone lined up ready in the goal, Serin decided an action shot was required, taking a diving leap from the left - leg outstretched, kung-fu style - narrowly missing Ryan’s face. This was much to Katie’s relief, a close second in the LoM votes and probably otherwise a unanimous winner after promising no tantrums with her Dad looking on from the side-lines and failing miserably!
And so the season ended on a fab result, and the right result, even if it was a couple of months overdue. Now on to the Annual Dinner and the crowning of the L2s' Goal Queen and Lemon of the Season. Rumour has it Jack might have been overtaken in recent weeks…
