Short Corner Practice, Anyone?
Georgie HurfordBack to our Long Road fortress after our little sojourn to Wisbech last weekend. The nerves were back as there was a whisper that Long Sutton had been pushing for promotion from Div 2 last year and they all looked super keen.
To add to the nerves we were minus Captaino Kimbo and Vice Robyn for at least half the match - they'd made some poor excuses about work or something. I suspect the true reason for Kim's absence was another trip to the vets after allowing her dogs to gorge on chocolate… But with a spirited pre-match chat from Soph 'I'm nothing this year' McComish (that's not true, Sophie!) the team were pumped to run around and hit some balls.
It started well. Within the first twenty minutes, Katie F had had a strike on goal. We did lots of little passes and 'hunted in pairs'. There may even have been a bit of 3D? The lovely passing resulted in Soph hitting a ball to Izzy, who slipped it to Alice, who reverse tapped it into the goal…yeah! They didn't know what had hit them.
Unfortunately, this seemed to get Long Sutton going and there was quite a lot of pressure for the South defence near the end of the first half. Blythe did a cracking job at centre back - nothing got past her and Roisin was her ever-reliable self on the right and had some lovely connecting play with Heather and Amailia. Somehow a short was given against us…it was like slow motion…Georgie Hurf looked like she was about to reach it but it levitated over the line right behind her… "Oh GEORGE!", she cried.
One-one and the half time whistle blew.
The second half involved quite a few shots on goal for South but no actual goal. There were a few that literally skimmed the line including a cross by Sophie to Flix to Kim…how did that not go in!?!
Long Sutton kept the pressure on but South managed to stay pretty tidy and keep it to a one-all draw. We must have had at least ten short corners and scored none. Great to know there's something to work on…
Back to the rugby club for pizza and to discuss outfits for a certain Badger's hen do.
