Old Acquaintances
The Ladies 2s headed to the beautiful Cambridge/Grantchester borders to start this season’s campaign proper. It took some of the new players (and surprisingly, some of the old players too!) a while to find the pitch but happily by pushback we had a full team raring to go.
There had been much speculation as to what Royston team we would be facing: would it be the team we had put twelve past during a pre-season friendly; or the much tougher side that had produced a nine-nil in their league opener. It was clear from the pushback that it was the latter team that we were playing. However, whilst we certainly didn’t have the free rein we were given in their D last time, we were a match for them and more.
Both teams played well, Royston perhaps appearing a little more structured and certainly throwing their whole team around the ball. But South had some good possession and threatened their goal several times. Our first goal came towards the end of the half. There is some dispute as to who actually scored the goal and Izzy claimed it as the league sheet was being completed. Following a later conference however, it was concluded it was probably Annie’s goal - no doubt something that will be discussed again towards the end of the season when the top goal scorer awards are considered!
Whilst our structure was better in the second half, our marking let us down briefly to allow Royston to draw level. But Izzy scored off a short corner, keeping her head when the set piece broke down, to give South the win.
Overall, it was an excellent performance by the whole team against a strong opposition.
The man of the match vote was tied four ways between Izzy, Alice, Lucy and Ellie - two forwards and two defenders, which tells the story of the game on its own: a real team performance in an end-to-end game.
