Goalbusters: The Story of Ely’s Nightmare at Long Road.
Maria HealyDarkness falls across Long Road land
The fifteenth hour is close at hand
South Creatures crawl in search of goals
To terrorize Ely’s battered souls
And whomsoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting their sticks down
Must stand and face the club of hell
And rot inside Mill Road’s corpses shells
Filled with anxious delight and anticipation ahead of the night’s antics, the girls were fully prepped to bring on their ‘scare tactics’ and shock Ely into defeat. ‘Creepin’ it real close to Ely’s goal throughout, from the other end of the pitch we watched endless sweeps and blocks and decided to crack open our trick or treat sweets; a vital part of preparation in lining stomachs for the night to come. The continued pressure was faultless but the efforts up front were not reflected in the numbers. By half time, only two goals up, we needed to ‘lift our spirits’.
In true Halloween fashion, the L3s ‘resurrected’ from a slightly sluggish start to launch a terrifying tirade on the opposition, resulting in some boo-tiful runs and spell-binding passes. Come the end of play, the girls, like a team of raging vampires, bled the Ely victims dry by ten ‘ghouls’ to none.
From the perspective of a defender in this match, as I mostly enjoyed it through my telescope this meant that I can’t possibly tell you the order in which the goals were scored. However, a cracking effort was made by Lucy and Cat, who managed to score four each, and Hayley and Dani too, who each got a goal past Ely. MoM went to the legend that is Meg, for playing an absolute shocker and ‘demon’strating some incredible blocks and runs. The MoM results showed the strong effort put in across the team, with nominations coming in for Lucy, Olivia, Cat, Lauren and Maria too. With the Lemon being up for grabs between Olivia, Lauren and Sarah, a fight to the death will determine this outcome next week.
The victorious celebrations continued into the night, starting at Laurie’s for her ‘deathday’ salutations, then onto Mill Rd Cemetery for the infamous ‘Day of The Dead’ social. Special mentions go to all of the wonderful costumes and painted faces that were present. Cracking effort, folks. Tequila shots were consumed, memories forgotten and dignity surrendered to the dimly lit streets of Cambridge; South, you did Halloween proud.

Despite playing at Long Road for a while now, still can't open the gate to the pitch under pressure!

Repeated reprimands over her short corner injections. See Douglas for technicalities…
