L2 3-0 Newmarket Ladies 2

Ellie Raffan

Oh, pants! Not about the match – that was great. About the end-of-the-weekend-and-I-forgot-my-homework-feeling. Oooops. And I know you’ve all been desperate to hear about how fabulous the L2s were yesterday. But what’s to tell? Another week, another win. All getting a bit samey, really. Eimear scored the first goal within five minutes to settle the team. Again. There was some lovely teamwork and remarkably crisp passing play. Again. Izzy scored a cracker off a short. Again.

But, actually, this match was a bit different. Our opposition were nipping our heels at the top of the league table, meaning there was real pressure to perform. A depleted pool of defenders meant there was a mild feeling of jeopardy and meant our captaincy team had to step back into defensive roles. It might end up a long-term move for Dani, who played herself into the Man of the Match slot from left back.

But although Newmarket get credit for working hard and intermittently applying pressure throughout, there is no doubt it was South’s game. The team played their best match of the season, dominating the play with lots of tidy passing and possession play, only denied more goals by a dogged Newmarket defence. We had to wait until the second half for more goals, the first the product of a slick short corner routine from Alice and Izzy; the second a snappy team effort in which Ama drove to the baseline, pinged the ball to Izzy on the penalty spot, who picked out Katie, who slotted the ball past the back post.

It’s fun winning, and even more so winning in that kind of style. Lemon status went to Louisa, for apparently being able to ace a law degree (known for being a massive exercise in fact-cramming and recall under pressure) but apparently unable to apply the same skills to the long corner rule.

P.S. My spellcheck wants to correct Eimear to Elmer. That just might stick…
