Are We Famous Now?

Alice Wright

The L1s travelled the backroads up to King’s Lynn on a miserable, wet Saturday morning, eager to put the uncharacteristically poor performance last week at Long Sutton behind us. We were playing in fetching yellow, with Kim taking one for the team donning a junior boy’s yellow bib when the shirts ran out.

Despite a dominant first half performance, South went into half-time feeling we should definitely have something to show for it, having spent the majority putting the pressure on the Pelicans’ goal and seen several shots go whistling past the post.

The second half started with Robyn M confidently taking up her position in the opposition half, before being called over to join us. Tempers became frayed with the match becoming increasingly physical. Alice ‘the Shover’ Hug earned herself four LoM votes for a push and a shove back against a Pelicans defender and some words exchanged (how did she not get LoM?!)

South really stepped up in the second half. With fourteen players the subbing came quickly, and through fresh legs South were able to keep up their energy and pressure. On a wet slippery pitch, nearly everyone lost their footing at one point or another (how did Blythe stay on her feet this time?), including an impressive near-somersault from Robyn M, who came away with two equally impressive matching astro scrapes on both thighs. We finally took the lead through a strong slap at goal from Robyn McLean at a short corner, helped on its way into the top of the net over the keeper by a Pelican’s stick. The goal gave us a boost, but despite numerous attacks on the Pelicans’ goal, we couldn’t extend our lead.

Player of the Match went to Emily M for never stopping running all game, making countless interceptions, and strong drives up the wing. Lemon of the Match went to Alice W for trying to crack the ball into the D, doing it literally, and sending two pieces flying in leading to a bully (is it one tap, is it three!?)

The defence held solid throughout, keeping Loopy from having to touch the ball all match. She may have had her whole day taken up travelling to King’s Lynn, but at least she avoided the £9 match fee. Happy to be back to winning ways, the return journey was improved further by our Radio 1 shoutout!

Because everyone was too scared to vote for Alice “the Aggro/ Shover” Hug. And for smashing a ball in two.
