#sorrynotsorry
Georgie HurfordThe weekend started well: the converted RAF base on the edge of Skeggy was an unexpected gem, the hot tub was restorative, the prosecco equally bubbly…and relax!
Switch to Saturday morning, my mini-break was rudely interrupted by a windswept pitch a stone's throw away from Skegness pier; the ominous foreboding of an eerily still owl watching over us while we were warming up…
Of course this is what we were really here for. After some drama on the journey to Skegness (Kim, we'll keep quiet about the loss of the Fun Bus's wing mirror) the girls were pumped and energised by a Maccy D's breakfast. Despite this, we were hungry…and not just because McD's breakfasts aren't that filling.
South's game started with a bang. Captain Kim gave strict instructions to score in the first five minutes and by God, that's just what we did. Early pressure resulted in a South short corner. After a great strike in from MC Robs, Alice W was on the rebound lifting the ball into the net - her first goal for the L1s catapulting South into the lead.
Alford and District were a determined lot, passing well through the centre with pace. They soon capitalised on a break resulting in a one-one scoreline. South stepped it up again. Great work rate up the wings by Hannah, Emily, Roisin and Maddy. We got the hang of short passing and were doing some lovely little triangles as the game wore on.
South scored their second goal after a ball into the D from the Hugster reached Soph, who knocked it into the corner. Again Alford retaliated, gaining a short corner and scoring. Two-two.
The tension was rising, both teams desperate for a win. There was a bit of tomfoolery up front as Maddy got into a few tussles and opted to play a bit of football. Kim and MC Robs did some impressive interceptions and distribution in the midfield. Somehow someone got a long ball up to Amalia, who was blissfully free in the opposition D… Channelling the Argentinian genius of Messi, she took the ball wide past the keeper and goooooaaaaaallll!!! Three-two with ten minutes to go.
Now the less said about the last ten the better. George (me) got a little heated as her only decent tackle of the game resulted in the full force of an opponent's stick to her head. Sportingly the player apologised but gave a helpful little reminder that if you will leave your head there these things will happen… #sorrynotsorry.
After a nail biting final three minutes, which included a great save from Loopy, the whistle blew. Final score, three-two to us - South's sojourn to Skegness had been entirely worthwhile. After some freshening up by some and not others (good luck to those on the Fun Bus on the way home), we devoured some top-notch chip butties, which even earned Blythe's MOM vote.
A great win for South as we enter the twilight games of the season.
