The Magnificent 16!
Howard SteedThe ever-enthusiastic M5s arrived at Long Road with the usual entourage of subs, supporters and general hangers-on in tow. Due to several last minute drop-outs we were actually within our league limit of sixteen players this week; however Steed Jnr was immediately employed to manage substitutions, provide much needed tactical guidance and words of encouragement!
The home team made a positive and energetic start, but alas it was the visitors who secured first-blood with a well executed short corner that even our super-hero keeper Nelson couldn't stop. South responded with an equally well executed short which Ben blasted towards the left-hand post where the skipper seemed perfectly placed to deflect it into the net. Alas a combination of the metalwork and a defender's leg came between stick and ball to block the intended deflection.
The teams remained pretty evenly matched for the reminder of the first-half although Bury were able to secure a second goal just before the half-time whistle. The break provided an opportunity to re-group and receive some motivational replenishment from our new coach.
South started the second half well with our forwards breaking through the Bury midfield and defence on several occasions on the counterattack. Keeping on top of a younger and fitter Bury team was however taking its toll and this allowed them to seal their victory with two further goals, although the margin would have been significantly greater without some outstanding saves from MoM Nelson Tang.
No obvious lemon-worthy incidents so LoM unanimously awarded to Andy T by default!
Our season starts for real next weekend with our more familiar foes from St Neots. Bring it on!
Nelson Tang
Another very well deserved MoM for keeping the opposition score to a respectible level
