Downton Abbey - The Movie (2019)

IMDB rating: 7.8/10
Personal rating 9.3/10

Review:

I wouldn’t classify myself as a Downton Abbey fanatic; you could argue that, having never seen an episode of this wonderful historic period drama, I can’t even be classified as a fan. However, the night of the first social of the year I found myself stood outside Screen 3 with popcorn in one hand and an Ice Blast in the other, eagerly awaiting the door to open for the 19:45 showing of Downton Abbey.

As we panned over the picturesque estate of Downton in the opening scene and saw the likes of Robert, Edith and Mary going about their daily life, I felt like I was a part of the Crawley family and had been through all their trials and tribulations they had endured over the previous six seasons.

The excitement began to build with the news reaching Downton that they should expect a royal visit. Given what they have been through over the past couple of years, there is no way Downton is fit for such a prestigious event of a royal visit. There is bound to be trouble: how could we expect Mrs Patmore, Daisy and the rest of the servants to know how to handle this visit without the guidance of Mr Carson.

As the film goes through the rollercoaster of emotions, with plot twists and turns, comical shenanigans, surprise setbacks and resurfacing of information that could end the Downton way of life, you can feel the raw emotion portrayed by the A-list cast. Maggie Smith steals the screen whenever she is present, giving a realistic and captivating performance that can surely only result in an Oscar. The film is truly a view into the marvellous world that only a titan of industry such as Engler could conceive.

All in all this a film that will withstand the test of time, and will happily find its place in the greatest films of all time. Would strongly recommend a watch.
