Not Quite Close Enough
Lauren CoatesThis week South 2s were away to Royston, hoping to keep up our winning streak in a new division. Unlike last Saturday, we all managed to turn up in the right coloured socks and after negotiating a challenging parking situation, in which one player had to be guided into a (very difficult) space by the rest of the team, we were ready to go.
South started strongly and had a good opening ten minutes, thanks to some great attacking play from Kendra and Eimear. We were awarded a short and thought we had got the early lead through a drag-flick from Izzy at the top of the D. Unfortunately for South, it was subsequently disallowed, but we battled on and had most of the play in the first half, with Jess and Jenny working tirelessly in the middle. Royston were however dangerous on the break and scored against the run of play just before half time.
In the second half, South soon found themselves two-one down. We were unlucky not to convert many of our near misses - the posts were not our friends. The pressure paid off eventually though when we were awarded a flick. Izzy took it beautifully and South were back in the game. Royston got another soon after, but this spurred us on and we had a lovely period of play with Grace, Dani and Aoife creating triangles down the right wing. This enabled Izzy to score again, creeping ever closer to her one hundredth South goal. We played until the very last moment, but it was a little too late and the match ended three-two. Not the result we wanted, but plenty of positives/things to work on.
MoM was jointly awarded to Jess and Grace for the lovely linking play they created together and their positive attitudes.
LoM went to Lauren for the parking issues. Jenny was also in contention again following some dubious warm-up mix-ups.
