I Blame the T-shirts

Matt Allsopp

Whether it was complacency, England losing the rugby or hangovers South’s performance did meet the standards they had set at the start of the season. Wisbech offered a much tougher challenge than their league position suggested and dominated the first half with suffocating play which Souths pedestrian ball speed couldn’t overcome. Their midfield was particularly effective at breaking down play and moving the ball high up the field, with tight quick passing. Unsurprisingly they went ahead midway through the first half. South showed some fight and managed to get the game to 1-1 with Jimmy Wood firing the ball over the line.

South showed more fight in the second half but couldn’t break down a pugnacious Wisbech defence. Wisbech went ahead from a penalty corner after a period of pressure. As the game began to open up South started to exert a little more pressure, culminating in a string of penalty corners from which a wayward shot was deflected over the line from a Wisbech stick. Unfortunately for the home team the initial shot was deemed to be too high and the goal was disallowed. Wisbech went to two ahead 10 minutes before the end. South were unlucky not to get a consolation goal 5 minutes before the end, Nev Warren slapping the ball goal bound from short range only for the keeper to make an excellent instinctive save.

South may feel they could have got something from the match but Wisbech ended up the deserved winners.
