Men's 3rds beat St Ives 5
Cambridge South started well, winning the toss and playing with both the strong winds and the sun to our backs. Unfortunately, our quick start was interrupted when midfielder Neil Sneade caught a stick to the forehead, taking him out of the game and down the road to Addenbrookes A & E - it's lucky it's so close, really.
The game restarted, with Nick Brown coming off the bench into a forward position and, after a brief scuffle within the D, determinedly scored our first goal of the match. We were up 1-0.
Cambridge South dominated the first half, with Lino Lorenzo (keeper) barely seeing the ball at all. The midfield of Andy Kennedy, David Scott and David Bridge and forwards of Nick Brown, Wilco Dijkstra and James Bridge kept them very busy, and James Bridge scored a second goal from a perfectly executed short corner. 2-0.
The defence barely saw the ball, but when they did, the capable defence of Nik Oettle, Phil Le Gouais, Paul McIlwaine and Francois Lemoine deftly took it off St Ives and sent it back towards the other goal. Another goal by James Bridge took us to 3-0 at half-time, the highest score we had seen so far. We tasted victory, and it tasted good!
Whether it was overconfidence on our part, or the fact they brought on a new, very good player as their centre forward, we didn't fare as well in the second half. After giving away a short corner, their centre forward deftly flicked the ball into the goal, making it 3-1.
Not to be deterred, Cambridge struck back, make several well executed plays into the opposition's D, but unfortunately the shorts went wide or were stopped. One shot (from a short corner) was even stopped by the opposition foot on the goal line - which merely resulted in another short corner.
A much more evenly matched second half saw St Ives score again (I think from a short corner), leaving Cambridge a little shaken and seeing that the guaranteed victory could be snatched from them in the remaining ten minutes. So they picked up their game with strong attacking plays, and a good defence, keeping St Ives on their toes until the last minute.
