One Step Closer

Robyn Rutter

As I’m writing the match report at 11 o'clock at night, I’ve decided to format copy the L2s’ match report: thanks for the inspo, Izzy!

Pre-Game

  • Girls make the one and a half hour drive up to Spalding to be greeted with new facilities (not quite finished yet, with showers to be installed soon, but looking impressive).
  • Everyone else settles for a smelly trip home in the car but Jess scoped out options for a make-shift shower as she had to be in London for a party by 6pm. Sink located; job done.
  • A buzzing team talk from me as I was desperate to play again after two weeks off.
  • Warmed up.
  • Lost coin toss.
  • Ready to play.

First Half

  • Great start from us, passing nicely stick to stick, forehand to forehand.
  • First goal came from Alice, who reversed swept it past the keeper.
  • Robs Murray managed to catch the ball in her shirt which paused play for a few seconds while we all had a laugh.
  • The second goal was a beautiful tap in from Hazza after some great build up play, passing around players and the keeper in the D.
  • A few short corners came and went with some great defending from Spalding.
  • Spading playing well had a spell of attacking which lead to a short corner being awarded and a goal being scored.

Half Time

  • Two-one
  • I forget almost every week to feed the girls jelly babies. Thankfully there is a magic jelly baby fairy who has put multiple packets in the kit bag. Hero.
  • Fired up team talk.
  • “Some of the best passing hockey we’ve played all season.”

Second Half

  • Forgot how to play hockey.
  • Spalding score within what felt like seconds.
  • Two-two
  • Remembered how to play hockey.
  • Both sides battled hard, with both sides being rewarded with short corners; no one able to convert.
  • After an intense period of pressure from us, Abi was able to tap in a third goal for the team following more great build up play.

Final Whistle

  • Three-two win
  • Thank you to Spalding for a good, competitive game.

Teas

  • Hazza wore slippers for post match teas.
  • Abi wondered how long a half in hockey was.
  • Jess successfully showered in a sink.
