South are Going Up

Pressure was on more than usual this week - Jan’s quick maths told us a win today meant guaranteed promotion. We’ve been focusing on winning the league all season, and getting this milestone ticked off was important to everyone. After some confusion about a January game rearranged for February in March, we managed to make the hour long trip across the Fens for a very early start.

We got the infamous ‘Bhav’s babes’ playlist booming in the changing room and after a glorious group sing-a-long to S Club 7, we were very very pumped. We always go in nervous but today we were excitable and very keen to get this win secured.

A misjudgement of the temperature saw Tess attempt to remove leggings from under a skort and over shin pads mid-pitch, mid-warm-up. This didn’t go well - she made a scene and secured LoM before the game had even started. She maintains that ‘striptease’ is an inaccurate description.

We came out strong and goal hungry. We quickly had multiple chances in the Wisbech D but just couldn’t find the backboard. An early short was put wide and a second cleared. Frustrating. Emma has made a huge impact to our midfield and had some opportunities to get chances to score early doors herself. We were playing well, with Laurie and Janette keeping the back line well-managed. We regularly set a high press and Lizzie stopped numerous scary sixteen smack outs. Wisbech got a lucky couple of shorts and just managed to get one past Ana on their second attempt. We were totally determined to keep our heads up. Zara was a good link between the defence and attack and after some good team build up, Emily slotted an equaliser. Heads raised again we were back in control. Just before half time Kat G made a silky run to the P-spot and just missed the goal after a cross from Tess.

Half time - still excited - feeling strong. Plus now we had the advantage of not having the sun in our eyes!

We started well, even if we did on occasion disagree with some of the opposition with regards to the rules. We won a few shorts that we didn’t convert, but we stayed hungry for the winner. Then after a season of great play. Kat G got a wonderful third goal for us that was greeted by screams of delight all round. Two-one up: the end and promotion in sight, determined to keep our cool. Niamh and Ginny defended beautifully throughout. A lot of the action was end to end and they constantly not only stopped Wisbech in their tracks but also made many great drives and passes away to the midfield. Janette also had a spell in the midfield where she made great impact.

Naomi had some good runs down the left wing which eventually paid off with a goal for her. The advantage had been played from a foot in the D just long enough for her to find the backboard. About fifteen minutes left; we were tantalisingly close. We all dropped back, determined to stay ahead until the close of the match. We kept them at bay and the whistle went at three-one. Totally thrilled - we cheered for Wisbech and then had a lovely team hug. We’re so chuffed to have cashed in on our good form this season, but make no mistake our eyes remain fixed on the top prize. MoMs were given out to many people this week after a lovely team game but ultimately went to the glorious Kat G - always full of energy and a great goal today in such an important match. Well done, girls.
