A Game of Two Halves

Howard Steed

It certainly was, and a brilliant example of how making a few small changes can massively affect the outcome of a game.

By all accounts a positive start with an early goal from ‘no longer bad boy’ Avi. Apart from a well-timed save from Naka on the edge of the D when we were caught on the break, there was little to bother the visitors’ defence or keeper. With the majority of play deep in the opposition half it seemed only a matter time before the goals started coming but nothing materialised.

Dr Rob Barton came up with a simple half-time prognosis – switch to a 3-4-3 formation and exploit the full width of the pitch, and guess what? It worked! Within minutes of the restart Paul S had found the back of the net. This was followed by a barrage of strikes from our ‘700-goal trio’ of Messers Greaves, Ta and Barton plus another from South Snr.

To add to the excitement news came through of title rivals Nomads slipping up against Kettering, which means that we need just two points from our final two games to secure the league championship. Simply put if we play like we did in second half of this game we stand a very good chance of finishing the job next weekend against Nomads!

A well-deserved MoM vote went to Paul South for two great goals and for being wide… Not sure if that’s a slightly unkind reference to his waistline?

LoM was rather perversely awared to Avi for getting no cards and temporarily forgetting how to inject short corners!

As a team we are peaking at just the right time… Bring on Nomads next weekend!
