Trapped

Tom Rosselli

Let’s say my start to the game wasn’t the best - a simple ball round the back, I trapped it and…fell flat on my face, Crostyx countered and finished cleanly, putting them into an early lead and earning me an early Lemon nod. But we are not the team to lie down and submit, as shown by coming back twice last week, and a strong period of pressure from our forward and midfield line saw a ball rise towards the back post and Harry C deftly redirect it into the goal.

Continued pressure and possession followed, trying to find gaps in the Crostyx defensive line - hassling from the forwards was putting their back line under pressure. However, Crostyx’ knack for finding a way up the pitch proved troublesome for South and a few smart and clinical counter attacks added two more goals to their tally.

South continued to attack the Crostyx circle, trying to find an opening to get back into the game. A situation where the oppo GK ‘accidentally’ touched the ball with his pads outside of the circle only resulted in a free-hit, much to the confusion of most of the team. But we did not allow that to dampen our efforts and a heavy shove on Chalk resulted in a yellow card and a short corner conversion from James B.

The second half was arguably a dominant one from South, but unfortunately possession and short corners don’t win you games and we could not find a way to get the ball those last yards into the goal. Jack, on his debut, won plenty of MoM votes for his work up top and his attacking movement. A few comings together resulted in cards - Sam colliding with a player. Me and another entangling our limbs, with much frantic attempts from one to escape (and perhaps less frantic from the other), resulted in another nod for Lemon.

Eventually, against the run of play, Crostyx managed to overturn possession in the middle and counter once more, popping the ball in the goal and making the task at hand seem again out of our reach. A burst of energy in the last five minutes saw a short corner conversion from Ed, with a one-two switch, give us a glimmer of hope but unfortunately time ran out.

A tough result in a game where we dominated most parts of the pitch, but unfortunately we didn’t take our chances quite as well as Crostyx took theirs.
