Length, Depth and the Ability to Finish
Fi WrightHaving come away as the dominant team last week but having identified that we had ‘struggled to finish’ following our attacking bursts, the 5s were keen to shake off this newly formed label!
The match started as it meant to go on with a great pushback and a drive up the right wing, and here the ball stayed pretty much for the first twenty minutes of the game, with South having all the attack except one break through from the St Ives forwards, which was safely mopped up by our rock solid defence of Shree, Annie, Rosie and Rebecca.
Liandi showed her commitment to the game during this period (and received her well-earned LOM of the match), when she lost her shoe but failed to let this deter her and continued her run up the pitch anyway, shoeless.
During her substitution period, Rosie B noted that maybe we were lacking some length and depth in our attack as well as not finding that backboard, and this message was conveyed through our midfield and forwards.
Following this, we drew out to the wings and then channelled back into the circle and finally found our first goal with a great strike from Liandi.
One brings two and Liandi found form again soon after with a second goal.
We went into half-time feeling buoyed up and keen to continue this new strength and teamwork.
The midfield of Fi, Claudia, Polly, Vicki and Nicole continued to play the ball around well and run up and sometimes back down the pitch when there was the occasional break through from the St Ives forwards, but these were few and far between and South had most of the attacking.
Following great assisted passing from all of the midfield and Kea, there was a further 5 excellent connections on the end of these passes for Liandi, bringing her net total to a sublime seven goals.
Another great run from our captain, produced a fantastic pass into Susanna and she scored an absolute beauty of a goal from the right post, bringing South up to an eight-nil score line.
St Ives did not give up though and managed to get a late short corner, just to keep Cassie’s goalkeeping eyes in the game. This was swiftly dealt with by Annie who acted throughout the game as a super-strong pivot to make our coach proud.
Hot off the heels of her headline-worthy goal last weekend (“Rittman on target in draw”) and not to be outdone, Sarah provided some usual left post ‘Rittman magic’ to net a lovely ninth goal, sealing South 5’s excellent nine-nil win.
Cassie reliably informed us that she did not touch the ball once and managed to plan her dinner during the game, but she provided immeasurable expertise organising us all from the back to aid the consistent strong defence.
Liandi, very deservedly, won PoM (alongside her LoM) for her excellent strike rate and positioning.
South 5&s hopefully can now continue this length and depth to their game, with the ability to finish it off in the circle!
