The lemon on the match opportunities were coming in strong before South had even made it to St Ives. We were set to play St Ives 3s away, and I am sure I wasn't the only one hoping that our hockey skills were going to be better than our map reading abilities. Although if google maps tells you to come off the A14, go round the roundabout and then go straight back on the A14, you would listen right? Despite both mine and Tess's mishap (lets blame the pre-game nerves), the team were all together just before our pushback at 12:30.

With the ever-expanding club, you can tell South must be doing something right. With all these new players and lots of availabilities this weekend (what else is there to do on a Saturday but play hockey?) the squad had a bit of a shuffle, we were a mix of threes and fours.

Spirits seemed high going onto the pitch. We started off with lots of energy and both teams were playing strong. South had good possession, but after some strong passes by St Ives the ball made it into our defensive D. Cassie demonstrated her excellent goalkeeping abilities by saving some great shots on target and Ginny was determined to not let the opposition score. Unfortunately for us St Ives won themselves a short corner, although I have a feeling Laurie might have been secretly pleased as it meant she was able to try out her new mask. With a great effort from South we were able to keep the ball well away from the back of the net.

Defence thought the play was mostly in our attacking half whereas our attackers thought the opposite – who knows, but we came to the conclusion that it was a pretty evenly matched game.

Due to some last minute drop-outs our defence didn't have any subs, but despite this setback they gave it their all and worked their socks off throughout! Although, from a spectator's point of view you wouldn't have been able to tell that they didn't get a break. They all made some great tackles and Laurie did a great job of clearing the ball, putting it in excellent positions for the mids and forwards to drive up to the Saints D.

At one point in the oppositions half I swept the ball up to our end and Kath impressed us all with her speed as she chased after it and caught the ball just before it reached the backline. Kath passed it to Tess who narrowly missed the goal. There was some great passing between Tara and Erin and South had a couple of short corners, but St Ives were so tight on their defence that unfortunately no goals went in.

Despite excellent defending from South, St Ives slipped a goal into the back of the net. 1-0 to them. We didn't let this get to us and continued to play strong with high spirits.

Although we weren't able to score this week it was a great game, with lots of people saying how much fun they had. We had another lemon moment after Tara admitted she didn't know her left from her right, which explained why we were playing part of the match with two left midfielders.

Player of the match goes to Cassie for her excellent goalkeeping. She did a fab job!

Lemon of the match goes to myself due to my love for the A14. Should also say I have double lemon points as I voted for myself (and Tess), not realising it would mean I have to write this report…?
