It's derby day... eventually

Lou Walker

We were expecting this to be a challenging game. The 5s have made a really strong start to the season and it wouldn't be a total surprise to see them promoted as champions. And challenging it was. The postponement meant that we played in lovely sunshine instead of yesterday’s rain – the downside was that a few players were no longer available, though we were very happy to welcome the addition of Isla Kotzenburg up front.

Annabel Wilson bravely stepped into the goal again and made loads of awesome saves, earning a well-deserved joint player of the match award. This was shared with Becky Eno for excellent play, energetic runs and great hits throughout the game. Liz Dunsby had a great game in midfield, battling for every ball and powering some great hits through.

Louise’s team plan erroneously put defender Anna Carden up front (maybe I confused her with the other Anna C who was rampaging at our goal!) but she had a great game with some excellent runs. There was some nice attacking play and diagonal passes by the 6ths, though most of the action was happening at the other end of the pitch. It was a busy game for the defence, with everyone making some great tackles and clearances, and using our width on hit outs. Lauren Dee had some great drives up the line when the opportunity arose, and at one point showed great reflexes to clear an otherwise-certain goal from the line.

Throughout the game the sunny yellows stayed positive and energetic, and hopefully all enjoyed the match.
