Youthful Wisbech too Strong for South

Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, were beaten at home for the first time this season by an enthusiastic young Wisbech team.

The match had started in fairly cagey fashion, with both teams probing from the midfield but not creating too many scoring chances. It then exploded it life after twenty minutes, with three goals within a five-minute spell.

First Wisbech took the lead when a long pass caught the South defence square and sent the away striker through to slip the ball past South keeper Lino Di Lorenzo. South forced a short corner within a minute, and equalised from it, James Bridge flicking home a shot at the near post. Wisbech then retook the lead with a near carbon copy of their first goal, only this time the forward lifted the ball over the onrushing Di Lorenzo.

A couple of minutes before half time, Wisbech added a decisive third goal after a move down the left once again worked a player free to run at the exposed Di Lorenzo. South made a half-time tactical switch to a less gung-ho formation, and the second half proved a tighter affair, with only one further strike added, by the away side, finishing off a neat short corner move.

A thoroughly disappointing result and performance from promotion chasing South 3rds, which they will need to put right with a trip to league leaders Market Deeping 3rds next Saturday.
