Men's 1sts beat Ely City 2

Cambridge South continued their domination of Division 4NW with a demolition of Ely City 2nds this morning. Last night was cold, very cold, and there was a very real danger of no match being played at all due to a frozen and hazardous pitch. But the sunny morning soon warmed it up and it was only a small part of shaded astro that remained unthawed (as Forrest found out in the first few minutes, going down with great speed and very little grace. Much like the dodgy vindaloos of back street curry houses).

The South team was largely unchanged from the week before and this consistency of players is really paying off in all areas of the pitch. Today, South used its impenetrable back line as a base from which to launch frequent and devastating raids into the Ely half. Thorpe, Benedikz and Hay were picking off Ely forwards with consummate ease, while Asbo marshalled the defence like a great all-conquering Roman general.

At half-time it was 2-0 thanks to the sharp reflexes of Keith – no one is deadlier from two yards - as he swept the ball in from a rebound off the keeper with unerring accuracy and the hard hitting of Cheggers, finally managing to rifle in a shot from a short corner.

South flew out of the blocks in the second half and Ely didn't know what had hit them. Cheggers, Graveling and Creed were dictating the game and their slick passing orchestrated wave upon wave of attack on the cowering Ely defence. It was no surprise that South increased their lead in the second half, finding the back of the net a total of four more times. Cheggers bagged a couple more (including another from a short-corner, proving that the first was no fluke) and Murray showed us that he has a keen eye for goal to complement his brutal and uncompromising playing style. Reilly's smart pace enables him the penetration that other strikers can only dream of and one sly move saw him appear at the back stick to knock in a loose ball after the keeper parried a shot.

After the match Cheggers was quick to point out the parallels between South and other great sporting teams. "We’re the Chelsea of this division. Actually, we’re better than Chelsea – we’ve only dropped five points so far this season".

Next week it's a local derby against Nomads 3rds – and this reporter can't wait to see it!
