Paying the penalty

Nev Warren

Cambridge South entered the game against their divisional and city rivals with lots to play for. They had dominated the away game 4-1 and looked to blood in youngster Hector Macdonald for his first senior game for the club. South started slowly and found themselves 1-0 down early on.

Nomads seamlessly attacked with a much stronger side since the previous game and found their pacy attacks carving chances out. Mike Gillingham was very lucky after a clean out of a foward to not be punished further. South then started into life and took the game to Nomads with chances coming at the attacking end. Nomads edged another to make it 2-0, before the grand veteran Rob Bartonez reduced the arrears by half. Nomads then made it three with a moved that roofed into the near corner off the helpless stick of Alan Radford. Moments before the break, a Monckosaurus smash off a penalty corner bounced off the line due to a Nomads foot. Flick awarded to South.

Now after finally getting the accord of the umpires, the whole team swiftly walked away leaving Nev Warren with the task he had not offered his services for. He didn't fancy it and fired his chance a foot wide of the bottom corner. Enter Half time!

The second half was much less of a contest as the largely stronger Nomads team pressed home their dominance. Three quality goals (Two of which were roofed into top corners) meant that the scoreline looked as tired as the South players leaving the pitch at the full time whistle. Mike Gillingham stood out for his comfortable flick save to keep the score down. Nick G showed courage and fight to the end earning deservedly the MOM honours whilst Nev took a curious Lemon for "Falling over".

Ps. Nev did fall over. But only once it was down to imbalance! He was fouled a bit, resulting in some trips and scrapes. He is delighted his team mates saw his skin burns and cuts on their behalf as a way of honouring his lustre!

Looked really comfortable at fullback against a strong Nomads attack. Big shout to Hector who had a great debut.

Lemon of the Match

Fell over two or three times and then missed a penalty stroke. Harsh award since Nev dominated the midfield.
