A hard fought loss

Matteo Meunier

With a delayed kickoff and a warm day imminent, the M6s face a familiar team in St Neots, looking for revenge.

The warmup ensued on a strangely cut rugby pitch to the side, and with the whole team working especially hard to intimidate the opposition, we felt like we had the upper hand.

The formation played was a 4-4-2 diamond, as the previous wide formation led to a heavy loss. With a late addition to the squad, an unprepared George entered the lineup with a moderately purple shirt!

Kickoff saw St Neots taking an early lead of 2 goals in the first quarter, despite some incredible saves from Mike in goal denying previous efforts. As the flashbacks of the previous fixture started to sink in, we started to regain our shape and control the game. I believe it was all down to Mike's passionate team talk at the (much needed) drinks break. A worthy winner of MoM!

As the game resumed, we continued to dictate the game, as one of their attacks was cut short with Jan stepping in to the way of a St Neots attacker, giving us back possession. This earned him many LoM votes from the spectators, all laughing profusely at Jan becoming the 12th man on our side!

After a long half time and haribo break, the game resumed with a St Neots kickoff. Throughout the 3rd quarter, the midfield was superb in controlling the game, and with some incredible defensive displays from George and MoM nominee Kieran, we felt cheated by the scoreline. Controlling the game wasn't enough, we needed goals to show for it.

Yet another drinks break after the 3rd quarter showed frustration between the team, as we felt like the way we had performed was more deserving than a 0-2 scoreline. The last quarter also saw John get struck by a ball in the shin, then after an extremely loud war cry and gracious leap to the ground, the pitch went silent in shock. With rescue helicopters inbound and ice pack delivery from Rob, John was up to his feet in no time. Fair to say the ice pack was short lived.

Despite our efforts, the game ended 0-2, due to a poor start. As Mike kept a clean sheet from the 2nd quarter onwards, his MoM performance kept us in reach of the game. A much more respectable scoreline than the previous encounter, and a good hockey performance from both teams.

Following the game, the question of "who wants to go to the pub" seems to apply to everyone, even myself and Roman. Hopefully our place at the pub stays open for the future, but for now we must wait!
