Performance Full Of Hert

Dave Aston

Cambridge South M2s began a new season with a trip down the A10 to play Hertford, relatively unknown opposition.

The new skipper's tenure began with a [empty] promise of post game beers and even McDonalds to get the lads up for the first game!

The team fielded were inexperienced at playing together as it contained a mixture of players across the top 3 men's club sides from last season plus new recruit Jacko and much welcomed returns to action for Colin and Puds.  However the lads played really well together, moving the ball across the pitch to great effect, mentions for this should go out to Scott, Walshy, Puds, Seb and Will in particular.  We were causing real problems, a couple of great moves led to some crosses just going past the post, a number of shorts were won and the keeper had to be on good form to keep out our chances.  Our new signing Jacko rattled the bar from the top of the D.

Unfortunately, whilst we had the lion's share of possession and chances, Hertford went into the break 2-0 up as two very well worked short corner routines were executed to perfection.  We felt though at the break that we were well in the game, and that they would tire quicker than we did, and so it proved.

In the second half South continued to believe in their game plan, and got a goal back that their play richly deserved.  A great run from Ollie, who caused problems with his pace all game led to the ball falling to Jack Chalk who calmly slotted home under the keeper.  Game on!

South continued to press for the equaliser, with Hertford looking to catch us on the break with some well worked aireals.  Despite us looking threatening, Hertford managed to extend their lead through a fierce strike in open play. South didn't let this deflate them and continued to press for goals.  Will got a goal back a couple of minutes from the end with a great reverse strike- which shows that he's listening more than the rest of us at training!  We huffed and puffed in the last bit of the game but ultimately Hertford saw it out.

All in all a really good  performance and great to get a game in, will definitely help with match fitness when the season proper gets going!
