Hockey scores by democracy

Sev Warren

Cambridge South 5th got off to a decent pre-season start when they entertained Bishops Stortford.

They started well and the game was fairly even in the first half with chances for either side!  On loan men’s 4’s skipper Matt Need bounced a shot into the corner after a skilful interplay with Nev Warren.  South almost doubled the lead when goal scorer extraordinaire Captain Rob Barton ghosted into the Stortford back line for a one on one that ended in a one on four after 8 not so hot touches due to a little ring rust.

Stortford then thought they had parity when a smashed drive into the circle took a touch and looped over George T in goal.  The goal was (rightly?) overruled as a back stick, but Captain Bartonez was determined to be generous and award the goal by asking for a show of hands for who thought it was a goal.  The lack of support was truly hilarious.

The second half saw more of the same with a seesaw game and chances being shared between both sides.  Jo Dant gracefully switched sides in the event of an injury to a youngster from the opposition (we all wish him a speed recovery!)  The Captain put the game beyond doubt with an excellent volley, but not before another goal was ruled out for Stortford due to a deflection off a shoulder!  They would leave thinking what might've been though arguably South just about edged the close contest.

Notable mentions go to Martin Grove who was a rock in defence, Sev Warren who was injured in the first half and Lazurus like returned to help out and Ben Amos who was MOM in the midfield, tireless in the tackle and swift in the attack!

Tremendous impact, making the opposition tremble with fear with his debut mazy runs.

Rob Barton
Lemon of the Match

Horrendous impact, making the opposition tremble with laughter as he tried to award them not one but two goals.
