Derby Day!

Sarah Rittman

We lined up in purple against our friends, the sixes, in yellow, as the excitement mounted. Previous matcheshad comfortably gone our way, so we were confident. But the sixes came out fighting and dominated the first few minutes. As we settled into our positions and Charlotte arrived on the pitch a little late, earning her joint LOM, we had more possession culminating in Polly scoring a great goal. This was followed by one from Louisa and another from Polly which Sarah also got her stick to (definitely not poaching!) This was enough of a cushion that we didn’t panic when the sixes scored. Great drives in midfield from Sammy, Hayley, Louisa, and Camille kept the ball moving forward, and theyplayed their socks off, earning a POM nomination for Hayley and joint title for Camille and Sammy. There were numerous shots from forwards Charlotte, K-A, and Sarah, who finally found the back of the net just before the half time whistle. Special mention to K-A whose chivalry in letting an attacking ball go in the D, thinking a defender was injured, showed great character and compassion, and earned her joint LOM!

Similar to last week, in the second half we really found our feet (powered by sweets and a pep talk from Nic) and really started playing as a team, with great passing and 1-2s. Charlotte had several amazing attacks on goal and was unlucky that only one of them found the back of the net, earning her joint POM for all round great play and her powerful short corner strike. The defence worked so hard to tackle and clear, and keep the sixes away from goal, Eloise also earned a POM nomination for her sterling work in defence, and Nic and Daisy worked brilliantly to stop keeper Mia from getting too busy. More goals followed from Louisa who also earned POM nomination for goals and great play, as did Sarah for her hat-trick (once we had done the maths and decided she really did score 3).

The range of POM nominations demonstrates what a great team effort this was, and once again our young new recruits Daisy, Camille, and Charlotte were a credit to the team with their talent and energy. Great game girls! Let’s see if we can do it again with an early start and long journey to Kettering next week!

For being too compassionate and stopping driving towards the goal to check one of the opposition was ok!
