Dreams come true for Cambridge South Ladies 5s

Rebecca Jarvis

The day out in Kettering started early but all were ready and raring to go for the 10 am passback.

The conditions were perfect although the pitch rather slow, helping South capitalise on their superior organisation, speed and skills.  Up front we had Sarah, Holly, Indi and Avi. The scoring started early and did not let up, including a first half hattrick for Indie, which she got on with without any fuss. There was also a goal for regular-scorer Sarah and a textbook goal from Polly, tapping one in from the post.

The game saw strong debut performances from Harry playing in midfield and Vicky playing in defence.  Holly scored her first goal for the team, notching up not one but two.
At half time South had a comfortable lead of 5 or 6 to nothing but realising that Top of the Table might come down to goal difference with other teams, South were determined to keep going.

Play continued with a series of short corners resulting in more goals. There were very strong performances by many players including Louisa “square pass” Pimblett; Polly, always in the right place for a pass; Daisy who was great at clearing; strong hitting from Rosie; and Shree showing some midfield talent.

The only moment of complacency came halfway through the second half when a few Kettering long balls got through causing a momentary pressure but the strong defensive wall of Rosie, Rebecca, Vicky, Daisy and Nic remained intact, meaning that Kettering never really threatened. In fact, the defence took the opportunity to push up and found themselves in the attacking quarter, feeding passes into the D more than once.

More goals followed with a well-deserved one for Avi and two more for Indi, giving Indi an impressive total of 5 and earning her POM. Goalie Mia kept a clean sheet, but desperate to touch the ball once she kicked a ball that would have been better left. Rebecca earned herself LOM after admitting she had dreamed it was so…

Kettering were a very good natured opponent, the tea was great, the final score of 10-0 keeps us top of the table and a great day out was had by all.
