A few words about James…

Harry Chalk

A few words about James, sadly playing in his last South league match.

In his first season, James played a massive part of the M1s title winning season in Div 2.  Indeed, in the last game before Christmas we won to go top of the table, with a last minute winner from James against City of Peterborough 3.  In the changing room after the game, we were discussing our title credentials as top of the league and after a few minutes thought, James announced that, and I quote, “we would win the league if we won all our games from here”.  Yes, we would.

I think that year we got promoted, Scottish Tom got a lot of the plaudits, but James was just as integral to that season, scored 14 goals in the league and I think most importantly with Tom, we had two guys at the club who were top quality and James’ contribution to helping raise standards within the squad has been massive ever since.

For this report, we will leave James’ rivalry with Nomads untouched.

All joking aside.  The big man has made a massive contribution to the club over the years, coaching multiple ladies teams, the juniors, Cambridgeshire County hockey, umpiring loads of games and vice-captaining the M1s for 2 seasons.  James always makes time for people throughout the club whichever team they play for men and ladies and I think James is really what South is all about.  So well done James for making this all happen.

James proudly leaves top of the Cambridge South Naughty Step with 21 cards and we will miss seeing some of his wild challenges.  He also met the love of his life at the club, Nik Patel.  Nik will be devastated to see James go, but he also met Amalia on his second club social and we wish James all the best as he heads down to join Amalia the West Country.

Well done James.

*********
The match with City finished 0-0.  South started out the blocks with a golden chance in the first minute.  The first half was a good contest before South really starting turning the screw 2nd half.  Loads of great play, lots of shorts, a few big chances and some half chances later, South just could not get the ball in the net this weekend and City hung on for a draw.

All in all lots of positives and plenty to build on for post Christmas
